Do you know what Blackwater is?

Welcome to America, “land of the free, home of the brave,” the singer at last nights Seattle Mariners baseball game belted out to the crowds. The whole stadium stood in silence as the anthem of this broken country was sung. I was stuffing an over-priced cheeseburger into my hungry mouth trying not to choke. Aunty Chris and I both started laughing when the words ‘land of the free, home of the brave’ came out.

DID YOU KNOW?: That there are more forces in Iraq than most people no about? Google Blackwater. Blackwater is a private company contracted by the US Government for quarter of a billion dollars to carry out operations in Iraq and other nations. Blackwater forces deaths aren’t counted in official death tolls and its personnel are pretty much licensed to kill. They aren’t bound by the same governance the American army has.

Private military and security forces at war in Iraq, What!?! It’s a great way for the Bush administration to hide what they’re doing. Blackwater forces are deployed in nine countries and are growing within America itself. Jeremy Scahill tells more in this video:

As I was listening to talkback on AM 1090 yesterday, the progressive radio station I’ve been listening to. It was full of conversation on gun and abortion law. I thought back to the talkback I heard on Newstalk ZB the week before I left New Zealand.It was full of talk on Jeanette Fitzsimons’ anti smacking bill.

Quite a contrast to the talk going on in America!!! New Zealand was talking about smacking while America was talking about guns and massacres. Looking at the New Zealand Herald’s headlines today I see that there’s been bus accidents in Auckland, Helen Clark needs protection from the Brethren and house prices are hitting all time highs. Meanwhile in America the monkey at the helm is blowing the shit out of Iraq while the Virginia Tech massacre gives him a smoke screen.

A word on guns in America: In Virginia you can buy a handgun with no background check and take it home the same day! You have got to be kidding me! In Washington State (Seattle area not Washington D.C) You can buy a handgun, pick it up five days later but you must have a background check. Then you can carry it on you providing it’s concealed. Believe me, people carry handguns here. *me looks up in the air, eyes go side to side in rapid motion and slight ‘errrahhhh’ sound emerges from mouth*

I really feel sorry for Americans, there are some good people here. Pity they have a bunch of sick idiots running things. Seattle, Bainbridge island and its waterways are fantastic – I’m living in a Paradise here. But when I turn on the radio, tv or read the news I get flooded with all the chaos. Don’t get me wrong, I’m having a fantastic time here but I think it’s important to look and listen at what’s going on around you. New Zealand and Australia really are the lucky countries, not perfect but a damn sight better than the US of A.

On another note…I’m sanding and painting Aunty C’s bathroom at the moment. Oh, and the Seattle Mariners baseball game was a ripper! Next week we’re off to North West trek then Oregon and on Wednesday I’ll leave America in the dust for my new life in France. I’ve got a good lead on an apartment/room and can’t wait to start learning French again!
